Legacy of Hope

This church’s history began when residents in the vicinity of 19th Street and 9th Avenue desired to have a place to worship near home. A prayer meeting was formed by Deacon Dave Willis and was held for several months. Property was purchased on 7th Avenue South and a small church building was erected. New Hope Missionary Baptist Church was named and organized on May 18, 1913 by Reverend P. R. James (Pastor of which is now First Baptist Institutional) with a group of eleven. Reverend G. F. London was named the first pastor. The church began to grow immediately with an addition of ten members during the organization. Reverend London served as pastor for one and a half years.

Reverend London's successors were Reverends Triar, V. S. Summers, C. H. Hawkins, who was instrumental in leading the congregation to complete the building of the church parsonage. Other pastors included Reverends C. H. Bums, W. M. Smith, and J. M. Royster. On September 27,1941, Reverend J. L. Fennell became the eighth and longest serving pastor (50+ years). During his tenure the church was firmly established as a beacon of Hope within the community as he led the church's evangelism efforts on the streets of the city and implemented several facets of Christian Education. Dr. Fennell was also an instrumental part of the church's relocation to our present facility and construction of the main sanctuary. Faith Memorial also emerged during the church's relocation from 7th Avenue.

Following Dr. Fennell's retirement, Reverend Alvin Moore became the church's ninth pastor and served for ten years as the church continued to move forward. On September 17,2003, Reverend C. L. Senior was called to serve as the tenth pastor of NHMBC. Since then the Lord has continued to '"add to the church daily" in all things spiritual, numerical and financial. With an emphasis on the "great commission", evangelizing the world and making disciples, tremendous gains have been accomplished. With the addition of twenty or more ministries; six ministry directors; countless facility improvements; full-time and part-time staff, "the Hope" is poised to continue in her rich legacy of offering help to the hurting, opportunity to the disenfranchised, peace to the troubled and empowerment to the weak.
